Ever wonder if you might be committing suicide with your sweet addiction?
Yes, you heard me right. Sugar is deadly. Most people don’t know it or choose to ignore the ole sweet truth about sugar… but it’s true. Sugars, high fructose corn syrup and refined carbohydrates are considered to be one of the major contributing factors to most of our modern day health issues from obesity, diabetes all the way to heart disease.
Did you know that the average American consumes a whopping 180 pounds of sugar a year (approximately ½ lb per person per day) Yikes, this is downright scary.
Is sugar really that bad for you?
What does a typical sugar day look like? First…let’s accept the fact that besides sugar and deadly high fructose corn syrup, the modern day refined carbohydrates are quickly turned to sugars in our system. Just take a look at a typical food day in the average American’s life.
First comes breakfast, a bowl of cold cereal from all sorts of refined grains and sugar, or some toast and jam, chased down with a cup of coffee w/ creamer and sugar, then a glass of what resembles fruit juice.
Snack time consists of a cookie (or two), perhaps a doughnut, or maybe, just maybe a piece of fruit.
Lunch…off to McDonald’s for a big Mac and fries chased down with a 36 oz cup of coke or sweet tea.
Afternoon snack possibly consists of another soda, a bag of chips or crackers.
Dinner – spaghetti w/ pasta, bread rolls and ice cream and cake for desert. Another soft drink, sweet tea, beer or glass of wine? Perhaps?
If you really analyzed what was just consumed you would be shocked to know that you have just triggered a major health meltdown and you would realize that the whole day was a jam packed sugar laden one with no relief for your metabolic system. Just to be repeated again the next day.
What kind of effect does sugar have on your body?
First…when you eat sugar you unconsciously set off a vicious cycle of increased appetite for more food and sugars, increased production of insulin, even greater appetite for more food and sugar and even greater increased production of insulin. There is no getting off this roller coaster…you are involved in such a sick cycle of unnatural cravings, binging on food, reaching great sugar highs, just to crash and burn again repeatedly throughout the day. Only to do it all over again the next day. What will eventually happen is your body will start resisting insulin, which in turn contributes to aging ahead of your time, not to mention all the excess weight to be gained, or of the very real possibility of contracting diabetes or heart disease.
Unfortunately, sugars and refined carbohydrates are everywhere in the standard American diet. There is virtually no escaping them. White bread, white rice, white potatoes, sugar, pastas, pastries, cakes pies etc. are all starches which all have a high glycemic load (definition: The glycemic load (GL) is a ranking system for carbohydrate content in food portions based on their glycemic index (GI) and the portion size.), . and are very quickly absorbed by the body and converted to sugar in our bloodstream in no time flat. Due to the fast food and convenience era which we live in the consumption of these types of foods is rampant. That coupled with the food industries collaboration with the government in the 1990s to introduce the utilization of the food pyramid as our guide to eating, recommending at least six to eleven servings a day of rice, cereal pasta etc. per day. Throw in a few soft drinks or glasses of sweet tea. loaded with high fructose corn syrup, a few beers or alcoholic beverages and there is no escaping the fact that we are a drug addict, using more and more drugs till it finally kills us. Are we nuts??? No wonder we’re obese and sick!
Sugar Addicts Beware …that sweet addiction comes in many forms!
Sucrose (white sugar), Glucose, Dextrose, Maltose, Lactose, Fructose, High Fructose Corn Syrup, White grape juice and other juice concentrates, Soda pop, Honey, Maple sugar, Natural cane sugar, Dehydrated cane juice, Brown sugar, and the list goes on.
…Plus all the hidden areas we can’t even begin to imagine. Food companies do not have to state if their food contains sugar or what type, only the amount of grams. Sugar is lurking in thousands of traditional supermarket products in many forms. Bread, cereals, desserts, crackers, jams, jellies, canned soups and sauces, yogurt, lunch meat, snack foods etc. the list is virtually endless. There is no escaping sugar.
What is the Worst sugar of them all!
Just happens to be one of the most commonly used food additives. High Fructose Corn Syrup. Just what is High Fructose Corn syrup (HFCS) anyway? Isn’t it just like any other sugar? Absolutely not!!! HFCS is a man made sugar derived from the fructose in corn (basically an offshoot of the corn industry). This sugar has only been around for the last forty years or so and is highly responsible for the obesity epidemic in our nation. In 1970 the annual consumption of HFCS was approximately 10 ounces per person per year and at around 2000 was over 40% of all the sweeteners added to our food and drinks. (Have you ever noticed how fat we as a society have become in the last 30 years? Obesity is a major health crisis) But just what does HFCS do to our bodies anyway? And what makes it so different than everyday table sugar? I’ll try to explain in simple terms.
Table sugar is a combination of glucose and fructose. Glucose is a basic sugar that the body uses for energy and metabolism. It is actually one of the main building blocks of all carbohydrates. It is a slowly absorbed sugar found naturally in unrefined grains, and beans. And unnaturally, as a part of common refined sugar along with fructose making sucrose (sugar).
Fructose is also another building block found in fruit, combined with fiber and many other valuable nutrients. Fructose doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion and subsequent increase in leptin. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that tell your brain when you are full. This reduces your appetite. When you eat fructose in the form of fresh fruit this doesn’t present any problems, because the fructose is combined with fibers, vitamins, minerals, nutrients and antioxidants, which slow your digestion. But when you have sweetened beverages, the fructose goes through your system much quicker wreaking havoc with your metabolism.
And even far far worse when fructose is processed in the lab into HFCS. It is even more quickly absorbed by the body than regular sugars. In fact it goes straight to the cells and doesn’t require the help of insulin the way in which glucose does. Once it is in the cell it becomes a source of carbon that the body can’t control and is quickly made into cholesterol and triglycerides. This means that when you eat any food or beverages with HFCS you are begging for heart and health problems. The HFCS causes your cholesterol to skyrocket and causes major problems with your liver, encouraging a fatty liver and compromising its functionality. It also causes your metabolism to significantly slow down making it very hard to lose those unwanted pounds. Contrary to the mistaken belief that fats are the problem of high cholesterol it is more than likely that HFCS is probably the biggest contributing factor. Basically, our arteries are scarred by sugar. If you are having problems with your cholesterol, I challenge you to cut out all sugar for a while and see how fast your cholesterol and triglyceride levels recede.
The use of HFCS causes all sorts of imbalances in your system. Weight gain is par for the course. When your body metabolizes glucose it sends a signal to the brain that you are full. But the consumption of HFCS interferes with this signal and you stay hungry and keep eating more sugar or HFCS, which continues the horrible cycle. Not only has HFCS been proven to increase your appetite, cause weight gain, increase cholesterol and triglycerides but the chronic use of this insidious (should be illegal) sugar is suspected of causing cancer and diabetes. Have you ever noticed that it seems like everyone and their brother is now coming down with diabetes and that almost every other person has some form of cancer? It’s not hard to figure out. In conclusion, If HFCS were taken out of all of our foods and banned as the harmful substance that it is, we would see a radical return to this nation’s health for the better.
It’s your choice, decrease your sugar intake, stop using HFCS cold turkey, or die of one of the many modern day diseases. It seems like a no-brainer to me. Ya think?
